My research focuses on the place of news media and journalism in Japanese society from a sociological perspective. My doctoral thesis focused on the working conditions and careers of reporters in the Japanese newspaper industry. Currently, I’m particularly interested in the role of the mass media in social movements and the criticisms leveled at them in their coverage of these movements.

Kateryna Kasianenko is a PhD Candidate at the Digital Media Research Centre, Queensland University of Technology, and is affiliated with Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Data61 group. Her current overarching focus is on practices of online engagement with Russia’s war on Ukraine in Japan and globally.

青山学院大学大学院国際マネジメント研究科・助手。2012年3月、東京大学大学院学際情報学府にて修士（社会情報学）を取得。同大学院博士課程を満期退学後、テレビ朝日報道局外報部記者、東京大学大学院情報学環B’AI Global Forum特任研究員を経て、2024年4月より現職。専門はメディア研究。コマーシャリズム批判の視点から、日本のテレビ産業および文化について研究している。

Assistant at the Graduate School of International Management, Aoyama Gakuin University. She obtained a master’s degree in Socio-Information and Communication Studies from the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies in 2012. After completing Ph.D. coursework at the same graduate school without obtaining a degree, she worked as a reporter in TV Asahi’s International News Division and later as a project researcher at the B’AI Global Forum, University of Tokyo. She joined her current position in April 2024. Her research focuses on Japan’s television industry and culture from a critical perspective on commercialism.

静岡大学情報学部情報社会学科准教授。主な研究関心は東アジアにおけるメディアと大衆文化、国際比較研究、放送ジャーナリズムなど。特に、権力に対抗するオーディエンスの潜在力と、その力を利用しようとするメディア権力の関係に注目してきました。教育・研究活動に加え、日本放送協会(NHK)国際放送局コリアンサービスの翻訳家・アナウンサーとしても活動しており、最近の作業としては「ネズリテ〜ネズミ親子と学ぶネットリテラシー」の韓国語訳を担当しました。

Sunyoung KWAK is an associate professor in media and communication at the Faculty of Informatics, Shizuoka University. Her research interests include media and popular culture in East Asia, international comparative research, and broadcast journalism, focusing on the power dynamics between the audience and media corporations. In addition to education and research, she serves as a part-time translator and announcer for NHK World-Japan, the international broadcasting service of the Japanese public broadcaster NHK. One of her recent translations is the Korean version of “MICE MEDIA: Lessons in Internet Literacy.”

Minjoo Lee is a project assistant professor at the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies, the University of Tokyo. She completed the doctoral program (ABD) at the same graduate school (ITASIA Course). Her research interests lie in the fields of media studies, gender and feminist studies, and discourse analysis, with a regional focus on Japan and South Korea. She examines media discourses surrounding precarious employment and labor, as well as poverty and economic inequality in Japan during and after the Heisei era, with particular attention to television documentaries and digital media, including social media.

大妻女子大学文学部コミュニケーション文化学科・准教授。専門は、メディア研究、ジャーナリズム研究。女性や社会的弱者に対するメディア表象や言説、社会運動（史）とメディア実践、ジャーナリズムの国際比較研究、新たなメディア・テクノロジーとジャーナリズムに関する研究を行っています。著書には『「日韓連帯運動」の時代――1970-80年代のトランスナショナルな公共圏とメディア』（東京大学出版会、2018年）などがあります。

Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and Culture at Otsuma Women’s University. She specializes in media and journalism studies. She has been conducting research on the analysis of media discourses and representations of women and social minorities, the history of social movements and media practices, cross-national comparisons of journalism cultures, and the impact of new media technology on journalism. Her publication includes The age of the Japan-Korea Solidarity Movement: Transnational Public Sphere and Media in the 1970s and 80s (University of Tokyo Press, 2018).

Akira Tanaka is a lecturer at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, at Jissen Women’s University. After graduating from the Faculty of Economics, at Keio University, he entered the GSII at the University of Tokyo for studying media and journalism at Kaori Hayashi’s Lab. He received his PhD in socio-information and communication studies in 2022 and after that worked as a fixed-term assistant professor at the School of Design, Kyushu University until 2024. He recently published “Journalism of Silent Voices: How to Attend to Minority Voices” (Keio University Press, 2024).

Professor at Ryukoku University. PhD in Social Informatics. Born in Osaka in 1961. I worked as a journalist and editor for a total of 26 years at the Mainichi Newspapers, Nikkei Trendy magazine, and Kyodo News. I entered the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies at the age of 42, and was awarded a doctorate at the age of 51. In 2013, I took up a position as a lecturer at Ryukoku University, where I am researching normative theory in journalism. In recent years, I have been moving closer to philosophy and ethics than sociology.

同済大学浙江学院社会科学部准教授。中国浙江省出身。北京大学卒業後、人民日報社・人民網にて記者・編集者を経て、2003年に来日。東京大学・大学院学際学府博士課程修了。博士（社会情報学）。朝日新聞社デジタル編集部（withnews編集部）記者、東京大学・大学院情報学環客員研究員を経て、2020年から現職。新聞通信調査会から全額出版助成を受け、博士論文をもとに『コレクティヴ・ジャーナリズム――中国に見るネットメディアの新たな可能性』（新聞通信調査会、2017）を出版した。近著に『青砖黛瓦忆嘉禾――嘉兴市历史建筑文化解码 』（同济大学出版社，2024）がある。

Rong Zhang, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Tongji Zhejiang College (China). She graduated from Peking University and worked at People’s Daily Online before she came to Japan. After obtaining her Ph.D. degree from GSIIS, the University of Tokyo in 2016, she worked as a journalist for Asahi Shimbun Digital (withnews) and a visiting researcher at the University of Tokyo. Her main areas of research are mass media, journalism and cultural communication. Her publications include: Collective Journalism: New Possibilities for Online Media in China (The Japan Press Research Institute, 2017), with full publication funding, and Grey Bricks and Black Tiles: Unearthing the Stories Behind Jiaxing’s Historic Architecture (Tongji University Press, 2024).
